Passports, grandma's jewellery, some emergency cash, the drive with all the wedding photos, the apartment contract. Most people keep all of it in a drawer in the bedroom closet — exactly the first place a burglar opens. A safe solves that in twenty seconds of decision-making, and yet the question we hear most in the shop is: "Which safe do I actually need?"
After more than 25 years serving Beit Shemesh and the surrounding area, we opened a Locks & Security department with 15 genuine Yale safes — from a 4.8-litre mini safe to a 50-litre office safe, all verified against Yale Israel. This guide walks through the five decisions that determine the right safe for you: size, lock, security level, fire and anchoring. At the end: gun safes, the mistakes we see every week, and the questions everyone asks.
Why a safe and not a locked drawer
A break-in is a matter of minutes. The burglar doesn't search, he goes straight to the bedroom, the closet, the drawers, under the mattress. A locked drawer delays him by a few seconds. A safe anchored to the wall turns those minutes into work with tools and noise — and most burglars simply give up and move on. And that's before we talk about fire, about curious children getting to medication or a weapon, and about tradespeople passing through the house.
Step 1: What goes inside — the size
Safe capacity is measured in litres, and that number says more than anything else. Put everything you want to store on the table, then choose by group:
- Up to 10 litres — jewellery, passports, cash, drives and disks, spare keys. 4.8-litre mini safe, 8.6-litre small home safe or the 9.6-litre High Security safe.
- 16–25 litres — all of the above plus a document folder, a camera, a tablet or a small laptop. 16.3-litre home safe, 20.5-litre fingerprint safe, 24-litre laptop safe.
- 36–50 litres — office, business, several folders and a cash box. 38.5-litre High Security office safe, 40-litre office safe, 49.8-litre Maximum Security office safe.
A rule we learned from customers: buy one size bigger than what looks right today. The safe fills up, and it never gets replaced.
Step 2: How it opens — the lock type
- Digital keypad. The most common: a personal code, regular batteries, and an emergency key in case the batteries run out. Right for most homes.
- Fingerprint. The fastest, and no code to forget or pass on. The fingerprint safe suits anyone who opens the safe every day.
- Smart. Yale's smart safe connects to the app: see when it was opened, get an alert, and give a family member access remotely. For a business, or for anyone who wants full control.
- Mechanical key. No batteries and no electronics — simple and reliable. That's the lock on the hidden floor safe and on the gun safe.
Step 3: Security level
Yale divides its safes into three levels, and the difference between them is the thickness of the steel, the number of bolts and the protection around the locking mechanism. Standard Security — for the home, jewellery and documents, at the most accessible price. High Security — for higher-value property and for anyone who wants extra peace of mind. Maximum Security — for businesses, cash, and anyone keeping things at home that must not be at risk. If your insurance company requires a safe for jewellery above a certain amount, check the policy for the level it demands.
Step 4: Fire
A regular safe protects against burglary, not against fire. Documents, photos, drives and cash in a regular safe during a fire — are gone. If what you store cannot be recovered, the choice is the 25-litre fire-rated safe or the 36-litre fire-rated safe — heavier (36 and 53 kg) because of the insulation layer, and for exactly that reason also harder to carry off. Step 5: Anchoring — the decision that turns a safe into a safe
A safe that isn't anchored is a box that gets taken home and opened at leisure. All our safes come with anchoring holes; fix it to a concrete or block wall (not plasterboard) and, if possible, to the floor as well, with anchor bolts. Where? The bedroom closet is convenient, but it's the first place they check. A utility cabinet, an inner storage room, a corner of the home office — anywhere that doesn't "ask for it". And for anyone who wants the safe simply not to be seen: the hidden floor safe is buried in the floor and covered by a tile or a rug — a one-time installation with a contractor, security for years.
A safe for a firearm
A licensed handgun owner is required to store it in an anchored safe when it is not on them — check the current wording of your licence conditions with the Firearms Licensing Division. The mechanical gun safe (21 kg, 17 litres) is built precisely for this: a reliable mechanical lock with no dependence on batteries, room for the handgun and magazines, and wall anchoring. And even with no firearm at home — a heavy mechanical safe is a good answer for anyone who doesn't want electronics.
Five mistakes we see every week
- Buying a safe that's too small, and six months later the important folder is back in the drawer.
- Not anchoring. The safe sits in the closet, and the burglar takes it like luggage.
- The code written on a note in the drawer next to the safe, or a code that is the date of birth.
- Irreplaceable documents in a safe that is not fire-rated.
- Forgetting where the emergency key is — and finding out on the day the batteries die.

How much does a home safe cost?

What happens when the batteries run out?
Yale's digital safes have a mechanical emergency key, and the safe warns you in advance when the battery is low. Change the batteries once a year, and keep the emergency key outside the house — with a relative or at work.
Does a regular safe protect against fire?
No. Only safes defined as fire-rated are built to protect the contents at high heat for a specified time. Everything else — burglary only.
Does insurance require a safe?
Many policies cover jewellery and cash only if they were kept in a safe, and sometimes require a security level or anchoring. Two minutes with the policy before you buy.
Can I install it myself?
A regular safe — yes: a drill, concrete anchors and the bolts that come with the safe. A hidden floor safe — with a contractor or tiler, during a renovation or as a small job.
What size for jewellery and passports only?
A 4.8-litre mini safe or an 8.6-litre small home safe is plenty — and if there are documents too, jump to 16 litres.
